What Hail Damage Looks Like on an Austin Roof
How to spot hail bruising on shingles
Put your thumb on a hail bruise and it gives a little, like a soft spot on an apple. The stone knocked the granules off the asphalt shingle and crushed the fiberglass mat underneath, and that bruise is the first thing we look for on any hail damage roof repair in San Antonio and Austin. The hits don't follow the wind. You'll find them on every slope, scattered at random, and you'll find them in the soft metals too: turbine vents, gutter lips, pipe boots, the fins on the AC condenser.
Wind is different. It lifts tabs and creases them, all in one direction. Plenty of roofs on Austin's north side have both kinds of damage, and when that happens we take the wind side under wind damage roof repair and keep each cause documented on its own for the claim.
Austin's recent hail storms
There's a reason we keep crews up here. On Sep 24, 2023, hail as big as 4 inches came down on Round Rock and rolled south into north Austin, and Pflugerville got quarter-size stones. The National Weather Service called it the most costly damage ever to hit the Austin region. Then on Apr 22, 2025, another cell went through Georgetown and east Round Rock, with the Saddle Creek area taking some of the worst of it. And the hail doesn't need to be huge. A shingle that's already cooked through ten Texas summers will bruise from one-inch stones.
