The storm every Medina County roof gets measured against

One supercell ran 34 miles across Medina County on April 28, 2021, from northwest of D'Hanis to east of Castroville, with 80 to 110 mph winds ahead of it. The county emergency manager's verdict afterward was blunt: a whole lot of Medina County roofs would need replacing. Near Hondo, the same storm dropped a 6.416-inch, 1.26-pound hailstone that the State Climate Extremes Committee certified in May 2021 as the largest ever recorded in Texas. Any roofing contractor in Medina County who doesn't know that date hasn't worked here long.

So most of what follows is about storm damage. Replacement and the insurance claim that pays for it come up right after, because here they usually travel together. Texas-RRR is based in San Antonio and runs 8 full crew teams, and we work across the whole county from our San Antonio metro service area.

Two counties in one: the escarpment, the lake and the clay

The Balcones Escarpment cuts Medina County in half. North of it, Medina Lake sits on the Medina River, operated by Bexar-Medina-Atascosa Counties Water Improvement District No. 1. The lake began impounding water on May 7, 1913 and holds 254,823 acre-feet across 6,066 surface acres, with its dam resting partly on an Edwards limestone outcrop. South of the escarpment, the lake's canal system feeds 34,000 acres of blackland prairie farmland around Castroville, LaCoste, Natalia and Devine.

Two soils, two kinds of houses. Up top you get lake cabins and stone homes on rock, which is metal roofing country shared with neighboring Bandera County. Down below you get farmhouses, Alsatian limestone, and newer subdivisions sitting on heavy clay that swells and shrinks with every wet and dry spell. That movement is why a roofing visit south of the escarpment includes a look at the ridge line and the attic framing, not just the shingles, especially on older homes near Devine and the I-35 corner by Lytle, which straddles the Medina and Atascosa line.

Storm damage repair across Medina County

The 2021 supercell wasn't a one-off. Late on May 17, 2016, golf ball-sized hail and wind hit the Villa D'Alsace subdivision off County Road 4516, west of Castroville, tearing siding and gutters off homes and smashing windows. Five years later the record stone fell near Hondo. Hail here doesn't politely stay on the roof. It takes fences, sheds, gutters and siding with it.

Our storm damage repair crews start on the roof. We walk every slope, chalk each bruise, photograph the soft metals an adjuster checks first along with the fences, sheds and siding the hail hit, and tarp open roofs to stop the water. How dense the hits are decides the job. A few on one slope, and we fix them with hail damage roof repair. Hits on every slope, and you're probably looking at a replacement and a claim. You'll hear which one it is before anyone talks about money.

Roof replacement and the claim behind it

Medina County grew 17.5 percent between 2015 and 2025 and added about 1,300 residents from 2024 to 2025 alone, most of them arriving from other states. Honestly, that matters more than any storm statistic. A family that moved here from a state without baseball hail has never filed a Texas hail claim, never met an adjuster on a ladder, and often doesn't know the roof over their head already went through April 2021.

On a Medina County roof replacement, we inspect before we quote. A roof that came through the 2021 cell with bruising may qualify for a claim, and nobody wants to pay cash for a roof the policy would have covered. Then our in-house staff includes former insurance adjusters, with 30+ years of insurance claim experience behind them, who meet your adjuster on the roof with our own photos and test-square counts. Our insurance claims process is six steps, and the hail damage claim version is the one we run most often out here. Replacement roofs get Owens Corning or GAF shingles, the two American brands we install everywhere.

Permits from Castroville to Hondo

Castroville treats its roofs differently from anywhere else in the county, and it should. The Community Development Department at 703 Paris St. requires a building permit for residential roof, siding, window and door remodels, exempts repair with no structural change, and sends historic properties to the Historic Landmark Commission. Inside the 420-acre historic district, a roof change starts with a no-fee Certificate of Appropriateness, material samples and elevation photos in hand, and the commission has final say. Our Castroville roofing page walks through what that means for a tin or cypress-shingle gable.

Hondo runs permits through its Development Services Department at 1600 Avenue M, phone 830-426-3378, using the MGO Connect web portal. We file there before a crew rolls. Read more on hail damage roof repair in Hondo, the county seat and the spot where the record stone landed. Outside those two city limits, rules vary by jurisdiction, and we confirm them before we schedule a tear-off.

Where we work in Medina County

We serve the entire county: Castroville and the historic district along US 90, Hondo and the courthouse square, the farm towns of LaCoste, Natalia and Devine on the canal system, D'Hanis out west where the 2021 cell started, and the Lytle corner on I-35. Lake homes above the escarpment share crews with Bandera County, and the I-35 side shares them with Atascosa County and western Bexar County. Charlie Carreon's team gives the same free estimate on an 1840s Alsatian landmark as on a 2024 slab home. Call (210) 802-6906 and tell us which side of the escarpment you're on, or browse the rest of our service areas.
